1. Authentic Stories
Stories share and preserve ideas, cultures and people. They cultivate, educate, create, sustain, imagine, unite, inspire and evolve. We believe in the power of sharing authentic stories about people and communities, and try our best to encourage others to do the same.
2. Minimalistic Structure + Autonomy
Our environment provides the minimum structure needed for functionality to maximize the agency and creativity of everyone at HPM We prefer an open-ended, collaborative and caring environment. Our structure is adjustable to meet each person on his or her own terms. It is designed to embrace uncertainty, the essence of creativity. We may not always know what comes next, but that is exciting and good.
3. Community + Human Focused
We always put people first before anything else including ROI or any other metric driven goal–we are a humanistic organization. We will not pursue any opportunities that purposefully hurt the communities and people we are trying to serve. Our listeners, and their communities and countries matter! We do everything we can to share their stories with the world, learn from and embrace their suggestions, and grow with them. Within HPM we celebrate personal exploration, lifelong-learning, family, refreshing and rejuvenating downtime, and big picture thinking. We do our best to help each other engage in that process.
4. Better is Better
Perfection is unattainable. That said, we can always do better; and better, is better. Our goal is to engage in the process of long-term mastery. We may not always get it right the first time, but with continuous improvements, we can help our listeners and their communities, and be proud of what we create together.
5. An Accentuation of Personal Passion
We believe that our work at HPM should be an accentuation or extension of each person’s passion. We can only make positive change by being passionate about our work and relationships, and we are.
6. Remain Humble (Think big and act small)
We are an interconnected community–we only exist with and to help others. For that reason, no single person is responsible for our successes or failures–it is a group and community effort. It takes a lot of help to accomplish anything and we are very lucky to have communities that support us. While we love to build big ideas, share moving stories, and reach a large audience, it’s important to retain the values of a small, fringe organization. We pride ourselves on the ability to change quickly while maintaining our values and mission; to experiment, create and implement innovative ideas; and to positively-critique the organization and projects to prevent large scale, future failure.
7. Keep pushing the broom (In it for the long-term)
There are no short cuts. Small-steps lead to large changes–change is not instantaneous. We do not try to change the world with a single action, project or idea. Instead we continuously build. We build projects, stories, and ideas that last. On the macro-level, we are in it for the long-term. Not today or tomorrow, but 50 to 100+ years. Our decisions in every aspect of our organization reflect this philosophy. Although, in the short term, we strive to act with precision, we will not compromise long-term success to chase short-term opportunities that do not fit. We value lasting and evolving relationships and sustainable growth.
8. Spirit of Entrepreneurship
We create and embrace a spirit of innovation, self-discipline, self-starting, and entrepreneurship. Projects are self-directed, but collaborative. The people of HPM are entrepreneurs–very much running their own projects and programs within HPM– always looking for new creative combinations, opportunities and authentic stories to share.
9. Transparency + Responsibility
Ethics and responsibility matter. We try our best to maintain our integrity in every aspect of our organization. We may not always have all the information, which can lead to mistakes, and, at times, harmful externalities, but when we learn of potential harmful practices or irresponsible behavior, we do our very-best to take immediate, corrective action. Transparency is paramount to maintaining our integrity. For that reason we share information, and believe in open-communication and open-questions.
Democracy and the idea of a personal-voice are important to us. Our projects and programs are chosen based on deep thought. We encourage all to have the chance to speak or comment on the projects we undertake, what we create and how to create it.
